SELECTED WORK • 01 CONTENT SYSTEM

MULTI-YEAR PARTNERSHIP • ONGOING

THE IDEAS WERE NEVER THE PROBLEM.

A leader with a substantial body of ideas, and several content properties that had grown up separately.

 THE SITUATION

The ideas had been there for years, along with a real audience and several distinct content properties. What had not been built was the operation around them. Each property was being handled in much the same way as the others, made when it needed to be made and published once it was ready, and two of the channels had been sitting at a few thousand subscribers for a long time.

Producing more would not have changed much on its own. Most of the opportunity sat in everything that happens between an idea and the people it is meant for.

 THE THINKING

Each property needed to be understood on its own terms. What is this one for, who is it for, and what should it feel like to watch? A weekly long-form series and a short vertical clip have almost nothing in common in how they should be made, or in the energy they ask of the person delivering them.

The second thing was packaging. Whether the right audience ever encounters an idea depends heavily on how it arrives, which means the title it is given, the image beside it, the first line of the caption, and where it is put first. Those can look like small production choices at the end of a job. In practice they carry much of the outcome

 WHAT WAS MADE

An ongoing video and podcast production partnership, run end to end. Over a multi-year partnership, Talking People has become part of how this leader’s ideas reach people. The involvement varies by property and has included strategic and editorial direction, pre-production, directing on camera, filming, post-production, titles and thumbnails, social and email presentation, distribution, and coordination with outsourced paid amplification.

The judgement does not sit at the front of that list. It runs through all of it: whether a piece works better standing or seated, how polished a particular format should feel (some earn trust through production value, others by seeming to have none), which idea inside a long recording deserves to be the title, what belongs on the thumbnail alongside it, and how the same piece should be introduced differently depending on where it lands.

Little of that gets decided from scratch now. Years of accumulated understanding of the voice, the audiences and the purpose of each property have settled into systems, and the operation has grown more capable as a result. Someone arriving new to the work would need a long time to learn what the partnership already knows.

Multi-year, ongoing

THE PARTNERSHIP, STILL RUNNING

Strategy to distribution

INVOLVEMENT, ACROSS SEVERAL CONTENT PROPERTIES.

Hundreds of thousands

AUDIENCES INDIVIDUAL PIECES NOW REACH.

 WHAT CHANGED

Audience growth over the partnership has been substantial. Channels that sat still for years are now many times their earlier size, and individual pieces regularly reach audiences in the hundreds of thousands, which is unusual for material of this depth. Growth like that has many causes. Talking People’s part in it has been to build and run the operation around the work: how it gets made, how it is packaged, and where it goes.

There has also been a quieter shift. People who had assumed this material was not for them keep turning up in the audience.

The ideas finally have an operation built to carry them.
